Uniforms

Starfleet

Struck in two-tone gold and silver, the Borderlands Combadge Series incorporates seven career track symbols onto the Delta Shield. The badges combine the futuristic simplicity of the communicator with the traditional symbols for ship departments (expanded to include several new career tracks not originally represented). A combadge is paired up with the uniform of an officer’s actual assigned department to better define their specific duties. The most common combinations are:

Command Team: Command Badge – Ship Operations (Red) Uniform

Operations: Command Badge – Ship Operations (Red) Uniform

Medical: Medical Badge – Sciences (Teal) Uniform

Counseling: Counseling Badge – Sciences (Teal) Uniform

Science: Science Badge – Sciences (Teal) Uniform

Engineering: Engineering Badge – Support Services (Gold) Uniform

Security: Arms Badge – Support Services (Gold) Uniform

Marines: Arms Badge – Marine (Green) Uniform

Fighter Squadron: Pilot Badge – Flight Operations (Orange) Uniform

The Borderlands Uniform strives to provide an efficient combination of aesthetics and practicality. Unlike the heavy cloth, spandex, and jumpsuit variations of prior Starfleet uniforms, this newest design features superior materials and no duty-uniform variations. The zip-up jacket worn over a formal department-color shirt is both easy to remove and lightweight. Despite these alterations, it loses no sense of formality; the jacket edges and pant-leg openings are contoured with an elegant and durable black lining.

Flag Officer (Commodore, Admiral, General & Marshal) uniforms are identical, but the lining is now embroidered with metallic threads (Gold for Navy, Silver Marines).

Likewise, the two dress-uniform variants are nearly identical to each other. The shoulders on a standard dress-uniform jacket are gray, while those of Flag Officers are white. Both versions include bright metallic embroidery around the edges and a black shoulder bar with no representation of department colors.

In addition to the already-present conformity, this set of uniforms does not come with any lab coats or jackets, such as those previously seen worn by the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Engineer on screen. Instead, the length of the uniform jacket was designed to easily accommodate for the wearing of departmentally-specialized multi-tool belts when required for unique tasks, e.g. a belt with a medical tricorder, hypospray casing, and basic medications for use by search-and-rescue teams.

Perhaps the most significant change from prior uniform incarnations is the placement of rank pips. No longer appearing on the collar, the pips are now attached to the inner-most left-hand portion of the shoulder bar.

Combined with the Borderlands Combadge Set, these uniforms establish a more recognizable Starfleet-standard, rather than incorporating the staggering amount of uniform variations seen in the past.

Although the Borderlands-series uniform protocols don’t allow for variants, an alternative set does exist for use by enlisted crew. Unlike their officer counterparts, enlisted crew uniform jackets are two-tone black and gray. The enlisted dress uniform adds additional gray to the sleeves of the jacket. Aside from these color changes and the use of crewman rank pins, enlisted uniforms are identical to those of officers.

Delta Freedom Alliance

DFA badges combine insignia combadges and rank in one. The stylized triangle represents the Greek letter delta (Δ) symbolizing the DFA’s place in the Delta Quadrant. The central starburst represents the DFA’s home among the stars. In the DFA, department is represented by a metallic accent color, as follows:

Gold: Command, Tactical, Intelligence, Pilots

Silver: Operations, Engineering, Security

Bronze: Science, Medical, Counseling, Dental

Marine: Marine ground troops and pilots use a gold badge with marine rank insignia

To mark its break with the Federation, DFA uniforms are stylistically quite distinct from their Starfleet counterparts, yet retain some details which remind them of their origins. Tough, breathable yet insulating, a dark-blue tetralgodon fabric is used as the base for the jacket and pants. A metallicized trim is used to denote department colors (see above). A rich Korythean hyperleather belt with rectangular metal buckle rounds out the uniform.

Marine uniforms are identical in cut and fabric, but use a dark olive green base color with a lighter olive trim and belt. Standard belt buckles may be substituted with a unit-specific one at the unit commander’s discretion.Dress uniforms are a lighter blue jacket with white pants. A more formal cut is used for the dress uniform and service medals are permitted below the insignia badge. Extra details not present in the duty uniform include department-colored epaulets, buttons, snap collar and sleeve, pant and belt stripes.

Marine dress uniforms are a dark blue base with maroon and gold accents A sash for medals is permitted for wear with the marine dress uniform only.

Flag officer duty uniforms are similar to their line counterparts with extra gold accents around the chest flap, sleeve stripes and collar with contrasting stripes (stars for Marine) and gold belt. Flag dress uniforms have a red jacket (maroon for Marine) and light blue pants (dark blue for Marine). Marine flag officers wear a golden medal sash.

DFA Junior Cadets

The Junior Cadets on the DFA Prodigy have a school unifrom, shown bellow. They also have a rank insignia, which is a lower-case delta with a star at the end. The uniform is in the DFA flag colours and includes a sash for displaying Junior Cadet badges earned on their adventures.

Romulan Star Empire

The Romulan duty uniform is not as easily definable as the Starfleet uniform. Romulan uniforms are not differentiated by color like Federation / DFA uniforms, but with ornamentation and fabric. All styles of Romulan uniforms almost always include long top with a low reaching collar and large angular shoulder pads. Belts are also common, wrapping around the top so that several inches reach below the belt bottom.

SS Seiklon Axel

Seiklon Axel has had a long standing history of individualism, since it is a civilian freighter.  In the past there hasn’t been any type of official work gear for the crew and communication devices were not always of a standard design.  Late 2412 brought Axel up to speed with a new look for her crew.  While still not a requirement aboard ship, the new Axel Utility Jumpsuit provides the crew with functional work attire while at the same time giving them a look of professionalism that is much needed in the highly competitive Setlin Sector.

These uniforms were a gift from one of Axel’s few friends on Setlin, Captain Noluk of the freighter S.S. T’mur.  Noluk had previously won a major shipping contract with the assistance of the Axel’s crew.

The Utility Jumpsuit is made of a fire resistant cotton with double stitched reinforced pockets on the upper and lower leg, chest and shoulders.   The pockets feature zip seal closure.  A patch can be displayed on the arm pockets to identify the Seiklon Axel crew to outsiders.  It isn’t often worn aboard ship.  A name strip can be attached to the placard on the upper right breast, but isn’t required either.

A companion to the utility jumpsuit is the duty jacket.  This can be worn as an alternate for the Utility Jumpsuit.

Seiklon Axel continues its tradition of non-uniformity by allowing the crew to decide whether or not to wear uniform clothing during day to day operations.  Captain Gorgon has instituted a standing order that would have each of the crew don the more uniform look when the ship is attempting to secure contracts and are in negotiations or subject to inspections.
